Communication Support

Many of our students need a helping hand when they join us in Year 7. This might be because their primary school was very small and OPGS seems overwhelming in comparison. It may be because they are the only boy coming to us from their previous setting or it may be that confidence is low. Some of our boys with ASC may also struggle in this regard.

We therefore have a range of support to break the ice and help ease them into life at secondary school.

Board Games Intervention: Weekly intervention for Year 7 students to support the transition into secondary school of boys that may find communication or establishing friendships more challenging. This is held during AM registration in the SDS inclusion pod.

Managing Me intervention: a weekly intervention for Tear 7 and 8 students exploring communication styles, how to mange tricky situations, supporting friendships and recognising the needs of others. This is held weekly during AM registration in the SDS inclusion pod.

VIP Homework Club: a weekly after school club (invite only) to offer a safe space for support with homework and a place to ask questions/raise issues. This is designed to be a social communication space for some and offers a place to complete homework for those that prefer to take less work home. This is held on Thursdays in Room 50.

Quiet Room: lunchtime quiet space that is run by Sixth Form Wellbeing Ambassadors but overseen by SDS. Games and chat available for those that want it/

Lunchtime Lego: Offered twice a week in the SDS inclusion pod. A lunchtime quiet space to meet new friends and take a break.
